First Steps with a
New PC

Security Software Required

Install security software and run Windows Update so your new PC has every necessary patch before it hits the open internet. Windows 11 comes with Windows Defender preinstalled and ready to go, or you can purchase third-party antivirus software if you'd prefer.

Recovery Media Recommended

Create a recovery drive now, while everything is working, so you have a way back in if you ever need to restore your PC or get locked out after losing a password.

Housekeeping Optional

New PCs often ship with bloatware — trial software and manufacturer add-ons you didn't ask for. Removing it frees up storage and can sometimes speed up your computer too.

  • If your PC is new, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the warranty policy in case anything goes wrong down the line.
